Headquartered in Taichung,Taiwan, YSM (Yih Shen Machinery Co. Ltd) was established in 1979. Today, it has become a global specialist in stamping and bending manufacturing solutions.
“Our goal is to deliver fully tooled-up manufacturing processes that are pre-tested and production-ready. This includes stamping and bending solutions integrated with operations that needs a secondary process, such as thread forming, welding, sub-part assembly, and riveting, etc. All these solutions are delivered on a single production line able to produce parts with speeds of up to 250 parts per minute,” YSM explained.
More flexibility, faster and lower cost entry for customers
“There are two important things for our customers: one is the speed of delivery, and the second is the accuracy and quality of the parts that they can produce. To help our customers, we do not wait for them to order a machine and then build it after receipt of order. Instead, we have a base inventory that we manufacture every year and keep ready where machines (around 60% finished) are kept in stock. We can then do the final integrations and modifications that the customer requires on these machines in stock. We stock a wide variety of machines that cater for their needs. We work on a modular design principle, so we can put the correct modules together to meet customer requirements in the final stages of machine assembly and integration. This reduces overall time to market and gives the customer ‘a jump start’ for their production operations,” the company added.
In terms of part quality, YSM builds its machines based from the current Japanese and European CE standards. For example, YSM machines can produce parts for circuit breakers. “We are already delivering machines to European automotive and electrical customers,” YSM explained.
Reducing capital costs is crucial. Cost, revenue and profit are the three most important factors in determining the success of any business. With the business situation today, due to this pandemic, most businesses are either stagnant in growth or are growing at a very small rate. Therefore, reducing capital costs in existing processes or on new investments is of prime importance.
The company, stated,“We have been able to help our customers with cost reductions on new investments (capital costs) with projects such as machine standardization and making our stamping and bending machines ‘modular’ in structure. We designed our machines to be modular so that, no matter the complexity of the part or application, our machines can be set up and each operation can run independently of each other. This greatly simplifies the process and reduces tool complexities and costs.”
“In addition, we recently delivered a new project for a customer in the switchgear industry – a combination of stamping, bending, welding and tapping processes into a single machine. We are very proud of this customized combination. With this, we are able to offer the customer multiple operations which would typically need three or four machines all of this is being done in a single machine,” they added.
TIMTOS 2023 Highlights
YSM’s upgraded CAMLESS servo-driven NC-26T stamping and bending machine has been in the market for many years now.
“We have now advanced its hardware and software systems. Significant improvements include, higher speeds, simplified user interfaces and improved safety systems. Currently, we are able to run these servo engines consistently at speeds of around 300 strokes/minute.” Other features that we have improved are:
• Easily configurable slides to operate either linear or radial operations.
• New safety features with SLS systems.
• Industry 4.0-compliant – IOT enabled software.
• Two-point stamping presses with longer bed lengths.
Global layout and customer service
YSM’s focus is on building local capabilities for business continuity. This pandemic has taught them the need for companies to strengthen their supply chains by either building more local support or by enhancing their existing manufacturing capabilities inhouse. They have had to reduce dependency on local suppliers and overseas imports.
“We have started setting up local Technology Centre’s in Asia and Europe so that we can support our customers with faster response times from locations closer to where they are based. The newly launched Technology Centre for YSM India in Pune has been successfully running for over a year now. Its goal is primary support of the Asian and Middle Eastern markets. It is also currently servicing our customers in Europe. For markets in Europe, we have established relationships with local partners who are able to support our customers locally. Currently, through our partners, we can supply machines that are CE-approved in Europe and offer trials and local testing to end-users.”
Leading customers to start a new industrial revolution in smart manufacturing
The company’s machines are proven and have been tested and tried for over forty years now. "We have always been leading in the South East Asian market in the area of Stamping and Bending machines. Today, customers want more. They want mechanically sound machines, and also they want all the machines to be upgraded with the latest Industry 4.0 systems. In response to this, we have enabled our machines to become the Smart manufacturing solutions for the future. Industry 4.0 may seem like a buzzword and, in a sense, it’s the mother of all buzzwords. However, it represents the new industrial revolution where the Internet of Things (IoT) and the resulting big data flow converge with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to make predictions and avoid errors.”
Collection of data is the first step, but there are still doubts about what to do with this data and how to put it to best use. The entire process doesn’t need to be fully automated but, taking simple steps, YSM have made remarkable progress and impacted areas, such as lower costs in tool maintenance by introducing predictive maintenance and the initiation of pre-emptive measures for replacing tool parts/wear parts before they break down. Predictive maintenance has contributed significantly to cost-reduction efforts by minimizing the following:
• Initiation of pre-emptive measures for maintenance.
• Reducing down-time.
• Improvement in the quality and consistency of production.
• Minimizing human errors and intervention.
“This is our first exhibition in Taiwan, or for that matter anywhere around the world. The last exhibition we attended was in February 2020, the Auto Expo in India. This was during the beginning of the pandemic. With TIMTOS being online and physical, we are hopeful that this will be a success. We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a successful TIMTOS 2023,” remarked YSM spokesperson before the end of this interview.
